Mono-Material Wood Wall: using computational design and digital fabrication to improve solid timber construction for use in contemporary architecture
LTMediena plačiai pripažįstama kaip ekologiškesnė statybinė medžiaga nei plienas ir betonas, nes ji auga natūraliai, jai pagaminti reikia mažiau energijos, ji yra lengvai perdirbama į kitus gaminius, be kita ko, ji savyje kaupia ir saugo anglį. Dėl šių priežasčių mediena vis labiau vertinama kaip šiuolaikinė statybinė medžiaga tinkama didelio masto pastatams miestuose. Deja, statybose, dažniausiai pasitelkiami daugiasluoksniai dirbtinių gaminių mazgai. Be to, aplinkosauginė nauda visų pirma susijusi su pastato statybos ir šalinimo etapais, tačiau pagrindinis pastato gyvavimo laikotarpiu, t. y. eksploatacijos etapu, sunaudojama daugiausia energijos.

Wood is widely accepted as a more environmentally sustainable building material than steel and concrete because it grows naturally, requires lower energy for production, can be easily recycled into other products, and can sequester and store carbon, among other reasons. For these reasons, wood is becoming more and more accepted as a contemporary construction material for large-scale urban buildings. Unfortunately, the use of wood as a construction material often resorts to multi-layer assemblies of artificial products. Furthermore, the environmental benefits relate above all to the construction and disposal phases of a building’s life, while the main life of a building, the operational phase, is where the most energy is expended. This research, therefore, asks two questions. How can we meet the many demands of contemporary buildings while reducing the usage of non-sustainable and artificial products? How can we extend the environmental benefits of wood material to the operational phase of a building?
This project proposes a construction system that draws inspiration from the humble log cabin. It uses computational design and digital fabrication to expand the potential of pure wood construction by improving the structural performance and building physics performance of the traditional log construction building. It then goes further by developing new, design-to-construction software with integrated tools for architects, engineers, and fabricators. These tools facilitate efficient design and project management, while also expanding the formal possibilities of timber architecture. The building system achieves an expressive, structural, thermally insulated, airtight, building envelope without the use of adhesives or metal fasteners.
The research has been developed for several years, and the construction system has been tested in many small mock-ups and a full-scale demonstrator, the IBA Timber Prototype House. Ongoing research seeks to adapt the system to a multi-story application to further increase the usage in urban, multi-family housing and mixed-use buildings. By increasing the structural and energy performance of wood and developing systems to use it in more settings, this research hopes to help address climate change and environmental damage through the expanded use of wood in architecture.
